high fidelity style

If you’ve never seen the movie that this post is named after, you really should get off your phone/tablet/computer and take care of business. It’s great. Even with John Cusack.*

Music plays a significant role in this movie and I’ve definitely been in my feels with music lately.  While the following is by no means a comprehensive list of songs that get me right in the feels, these have been playing on a pretty frequent rotation lately so I feel the need to just share these little nuggets.

So, in true High Fidelity style, here’s a (current) top 5 list of “Songs that Get Me Right in the Feels Every.Single.Time”

5. Say it to Me Now – Glen Hansard, Once soundtrack

  • I first heard this song when I watched the movie (I’m pretty sure it’s the first scene of the movie — him singing this in the opening credits) and I immediately cried.  So.dang.good.

4.  High and Dry- Radiohead, The Bends album

  • I don’t know what to say about this song except that I just freaking love it.  Thom Yorke just knows what’s up.

3.  Missed the Boat – Modest Mouse, We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank album

  • I randomly heard this song a few years ago on the Sirius XM channel  36 “Alt Nation” and IMMEDIATELY found it on iTunes and downloaded it.  I rarely feel the need to take immediate action when I hear a cool song, but I didn’t want to forget it.  It made me feel — I don’t know.  Meloncholy? But in the best of ways? I don’t know. I can’t explain it, but this song did it for me then and does it for me now.

2.  You Got It – Roy Orbison, Mystery Girl album

  • This is just a great love song.  I’m not sure if I love the original or the one that Whoopi Goldberg & Mary Louise Parker performed in the movie Boys on the Side, but it’s good stuff.

and 1. Shine – Leon Bridges, Coming Home album

  • Leon Bridges knows how to make all.the.feelings happen in his delivery. There’s not much else I can say except you should totally shell out the cash and just get the whole album.  He’s a great modern artist that has the style and sophistication of gospel meets motown.  He’s the bomb.

*John Cusack — oh John Cusack. I can’t get behind you, 100%.  I love you in Serendipity because you’re adorable. I love you in High Fidelity because you’re a train wreck that I love and relate to in weird ways (music is autobiographical to me, as well). I love you in Say Anything because…

But… there is a side of you that I’m not sure I can love. Can I verbalize it? No. I cannot. I don’t know what my problem is. But let it be known, America’s Sweethearts was an insult to America. So was “2012”. And “1408” was just too scary for me and I cannot forgive you for terrifying me.

  1. Love this and love you! The book is great too! I watched this movie for the gazillionth time the other night. I love the ability to feel ANY emotion humanly possible through song. ❤🎶
